A resident of Agamenticus Estates who saw a shirtless man banging on a neighbor’s door said he called police a few hours after the July 7 search for a man who fled a traffic stop was first publicized.
The resident, who asked that his name not be used, said he was out in his front yard when a bare-chested man wearing black pants – the description put out publicly by police – began knocking on the door and calling out to the neighbor.
The resident immediately called police, who arrived within minutes, but the neighbor and the man apparently fleeing the police had already driven away in the neighbor’s vehicle, he said.
Police, who confirmed they received a statement from an Agamenticus resident, have not nailed down the identity of the man pursued last week after a traffic stop.
A female passenger in the truck he allegedly was driving was arrested at 11:37 a.m. the same day and charged with possession of meth, Deputy Chief Scott Stephens told the Reporter this week.
The 37-year-old Berwick woman, who was still in the truck when police pulled it over in the Post Office parking lot behind where the truck had stopped, was charged with possession of a Class W drug, the most strictly controlled substances. But by that point the man had fled, according to Stephens.
Another woman, the owner of the truck, was called to the scene afterward to pick up her truck.
Police are still investigating the case, which began with a traffic violation stop. Police are “just still trying to positively identify the driver,” Stephens said in an email Tuesday morning.
