What we do:

  • Keep local government accountable through independent reporting on Town Council, School Board, Planning Board, and other public meetings.
  • Ensure South Berwick has its own local news source dedicated exclusively to the people, issues, and events that matter here.
  • Support factual, nonpartisan journalism produced in the public interest and available free to everyone.
  • Invest in a stronger community by helping preserve the trusted local reporting that keeps residents informed, connected, and engaged.

The South Berwick Reporter was founded in the spring of 2023 by a group of local citizens who recognized that South Berwick had gone more than five years without consistent local news coverage. Concerned that important town meetings, civic issues, and community events were no longer being reported, they launched a free online news publication dedicated to restoring reliable local journalism. From the beginning, the Reporter focused on covering Town Council, Planning Board, and School Board meetings while also reporting on other issues and events important to the community as volunteer resources allow.

The Reporter was created as part of the growing national movement to address America’s “news deserts”—communities that have lost regular local news coverage as newspapers have closed or consolidated. Operated by an all-volunteer editorial staff, the publication is committed to providing factual, independent reporting that fosters an informed and engaged citizenry while reflecting the diversity of the South Berwick community. Since its launch, the organization has expanded its reporting staff, published hundreds of local news stories, and continues to grow its coverage as additional volunteers and financial support become available.
