Caroline Arakelian has been named the Marshwood district’s new superintendent of schools, according to an announcement by Heidi Early-Hersey, interim superintendent.
Chosen from the top three candidates interviewed by the Board of Directors, Arakelian brings more than 20 years of experience in public education, having served in multi-town school districts as a teacher, building and district-level administrator, assistant superintendent and superintendent, Early-Hersey said.
The new superintendent will host a “meet the new superintendent” gathering at Marshwood High School from 6:00-6:45 p.m. Monday, May 11, prior to the district’s Annual Budget Meeting.
Arakelian, who holds a doctorate in educational leadership, most recently was superintendent of schools for the Governor Wentworth Regional School District in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region.
“Throughout her career, Dr. Arakelian has worked in school districts across both the Lakes Region and Seacoast areas of New Hampshire, gaining valuable experience serving diverse student populations and communities,” Early-Hersey said, citing leadership positions in special education, strategic planning and budget development.
“She is committed to collaborative leadership, strong community partnerships, and ensuring high-quality educational opportunities for all students.”
Arakelian earned a doctorate of philosophy in educational leadership from the University of New Hampshire, a master’s degree in education from Rivier University in Nashua, N.H., and an undergraduate degree in psychology from Johnson State College in Johnson, Vt.
Early-Hersey, who has served as interim superintendent since John Caverly’s departure from the position in May 2025, stated in her announcement to district families, “After careful thought, I chose not to apply for the permanent superintendent role.”
While appreciating the experience and challenges of the job, she said, she is eager to return to her previous position as district curriculum coordinator, which involves working more directly with teaching and learning. “Supporting the incredible work happening in our classrooms each day is where my passion truly lies,” she said.
“It has been an honor to serve Eliot, South Berwick and Rollinsford as interim superintendent this past year,” said Early-Hersey. “I am grateful for the trust from the RSU35 school board and staff, and proud to be part of such a supportive community.”
