The annual LanternFest will return to South Berwick Wednesday, Aug.19, on the grounds of Spring Hill function center in South Berwick.

Billed as “a magical night of music and festivities,” the 15th annual event includes a parade of light through the field and the launching of water lanterns that float across Knights Pond. The evening ends with a Dance Party, with free light-up wands for all. The rain date is Aug. 20.

The event, running 5:30 to 9 p.m., is hosted by SoBo Central, a community nonprofit, as a celebration of summer and another year of community, according to the organizers.

Visitors are encouraged to bring picnics and blankets, or purchase dinner from VFW Post 5744 and Spring Hill, while they listen to the music of Trouble with 88, a band known for playing classic rock with a shot of soul. Treats are also for sale by nonprofit organizations, with free activities for the kids..

“We encourage everyone to bring parade lanterns you’ve made at home, or you can make one that night for a suggested donation,” said Hanna Bulger, an organizer, who noted that “homemade lanterns can be as simple as a t-light in a paper bag or as complex as an art project.”

The event is free, though a $5 donation is suggested or $20 per family, which is taken at the entrance gate or when you register for free tickets, The maximum attendance is 2,500, so visitors are encouraged to register in advance here and show ticket info at the entrance.

Revelers are also encouraged to bring a flashlight for walking back to their cars, and to carpool when possible. No dogs, water lanterns from home or alcohol are allowed.

SoBo Central is an umbrella organization that includes eight local programs helping to make South Berwick a vibrant and caring community.
