The public is invited to review and comment on a proposed transportation improvement project for downtown South Berwick Tuesday evening at the Community Center.

An open house will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 6, with residents invited to drop in to view the proposed plans, talk with members of the project team, and ask questions about the project.

At a formal public meeting at 6:30 p.m., the project team will give  a presentation on the plans and attendees will be invited to ask questions.  The meeting will also be zoomed here.

The South Berwick Village Transportation Improvement Project is moving into its next phase, and residents will have other opportunities this month to learn more about the project, review the plans, and provide feedback, according to the Town website.

The webpage for the South Berwick Village Transportation Improvement Project includes additional information about the project, current preliminary design information, the 2023 Route 236 Planning Study, and other project documents and resources.

“Community input has been an important part of this project from the beginning and will continue to help inform the process as the project moves forward,” the Town website says.

The Town is working with the state Department of Transportation on transportation and safety improvements along the Route 4/Route 236 Main Street corridor through the village area. The project builds on a 2023 Route 236 Planning Study that looked at traffic conditions, crash history, pedestrian safety, intersection operations and community input.

The preliminary design includes improvements at the Main Street intersections with Dow Highway, commonly known as 236, and Portland Street, as well as along the corridor between Academy and Norton streets. Proposed improvements include traffic signals, intersection and roadway changes, upgraded pedestrian crossings and accessible sidewalks.

The project is still in the design and review process, and the plans will continue to be refined. A presentation on the plan is available here

The  public comment period runs through approximately Oct. 21.
