Absentee ballots will be available at the Town Clerk’s office Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 5 and 6, for residents to begin early and absentee voting.
Town Hall will be closed Oct. 7 and 8 to allow the Clerk’s office as well as the Code Enforcement, Planning, and Assessing offices to move to the newly renovated first floor, and will reopen Tuesday, Oct 13, after Indigenous People’s Day is observed Oct. 12.
People can register to vote in South Berwick any time the Clerk’s office is open: Monday-Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
To register, residents must be citizens of the United States, at least 16 years old, and have proof of residency in South Berwick, according to Maine state law. The Town Clerk’s office will answer questions about the voting process by phone and email, according to the Town website.
A special Voter Registration Night being held in South Berwick for the first time is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, in the Clerk’s office to allow new voters to register; registered voters to update registration information; and anyone to ask questions about voting or Election Day procedures.
The ballot drop box behind the Town Hall, now covered in black plastic, will be uncovered and available for ballot deposits once voting starts Oct. 5.
Applications for absentee ballots to be mailed to home addresses are now available via the Town website. Completed ballots may be mailed, put in the ballot drop box, returned in person to the Town Clerk’s office, or brought to the polls at Marshwood High School by 8 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3.
The Clerk’s office is looking for additional Election Day poll workers, especially people who can also put in two days a week in October up until the election. All poll workers paid by the hour must attend a training and assist with election setup on Friday, Oct. 30, at the high school, according to the Town website.
