Candidates vying for local and state offices will participate in this year’s Meet the Candidates event at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, in the South Berwick Community Center, 71 Norton St.
The annual forum, sponsored for the third year by the South Berwick Reporter, will be accessible on Zoom and recorded for later viewing.
Twelve candidates, including those running for South Berwick Town Council, MSAD 35 Board of Directors, state House of Representatives and state Senate, have been invited to participate.
Four candidates are competing for two open seats on the South Berwick Town Council: Jane Brekke, Ronald Fousek, Dorothy Maguire and Anthony Palazzetti. Both council terms are three years.
School board candidates are Perrin Chick, running for a one-year term vacated by Lisa Flynn, and Heather Holland, who is seeking a second three-year term. Both candidates are unopposed.
In House District 149, which includes parts of South Berwick and North Berwick, Mallory Cook of South Berwick, a Democrat, is challenging Timothy Towne of North Berwick, a Republican. Both candidates are seeking a first term in the House.
In House District 150, which covers Eliot and parts of South Berwick and Kittery, Democrat Alex Orestis of Eliot and Republican Mark Zimmer of South Berwick are vying for the position previously held by Democrat Michele Meyer of Eliot, who termed out.
In Senate District 35, Democrat Michele Meyer of Eliot and Republican Julie Rakic of Kittery Point are running for the seat being vacated by Sen. Mark Lawrence of Eliot, a Democrat, who termed out.
Senate and House terms are two years, and members of the Legislature may not serve more than four consecutive terms.
All candidates will be asked the same two questions: what are their qualifications and reasons for running; and what solutions do they suggest for addressing what they consider the top two issues facing the town, state, or school district. They also will be invited to offer closing remarks.
