In anticipation of a high voter turnout for the Nov. 3 election, Town Clerk Monique Ward has issued an urgent appeal for additional community volunteers to help with counting the votes and cleaning up at the end of the day.

More than 1,600 absentee ballots had already been processed by midday today, the last day for early voting, Ward said.

A special Voter Registration Night is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. tonight, Thursday, Oct. 29, in the clerk’s office to allow new voters to register; registered voters to update registration information; and anyone to ask questions about voting or Election Day procedures.

Several people responded to Ward’s earlier appeal for volunteers, but she hopes for more volunteers for each of three six-hour shifts Tuesday, which are 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.; noon to 6 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Anyone interested should contact the town’s Human Resources office to get the necessary background check.

Volunteers can sign up for a shift at this link.

A training and walkthrough session is scheduled for 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, at Marshwood High School.

Volunteers who can’t attend that training can arrange for training at a different time through the town clerk’s office at (207)384-3001.

Meals will be available during each shift. Potluck contributions are welcome, but certainly not required, according to the Town’s website.
