By Thursday, Oct. 15, more than 700 people in South Berwick had cast ballots since early voting began Oct. 5, according to Town Clerk Monique Ward.
This count includes both absentee and early voting ballots.
According to the state, South Berwick had some 5,960 registered voters in 2025, including 2,384 enrolled as Democrats; 1,478 as Republicans, and 1,878 unenrolled. Some 4,740 voters in South Berwick cast ballots in the 2024 presidential election.
Residents are able to vote in person whenever the Town Clerk’s office is open, 9 a.m. to 5 pm. Monday-Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays. They cannot leave the office with a ballot, but must mark their ballot at a semi-enclosed booth and turn it in to the clerk.
Citizens not yet registered to vote in South Berwick may do so during the clerk’s hours, indicating their preference for one of the political parties or unenrolled, commonly referred to as independent.
The clerk’s office is now located on the newly renovated first floor of Town Hall, which opened Tuesday, Oct 13.
Applications for absentee ballots to be mailed to home addresses are available at the clerk’s office; through the Town website; or via the Maine Secretary of State’s office. Voters do not need to complete an application if they vote in person at the clerk’s office.
The deadline for absentee voting in the presence of the clerk, unless special circumstances exist, is the Thursday before the election, this year Oct. 29.
Voters may also turn in absentee ballots by mail, in the clerk’s office, or in the secure ballot dropbox next to the trailer in the parking lot behind Town Hall.
Completed absentee ballots also can be mailed to the clerk’s office or hand delivered to the polling place at Marshwood High School by 8 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3.
A special Voter Registration Night is being held in South Berwick for the first time, from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, in the clerk’s office.
