Cruisers have run-ins with falling trees as police log 9 arrests, 187 vehicle stops Feb. 9-22

Two South Berwick police cruisers, the newest and oldest, are being repaired following separate run-ins with falling trees.

The department’s newest cruiser was damaged several weeks ago when the officer at the wheel was directed through a tree cutting work zone, and a limb fell and hit the cruiser, according to Deputy Chief Scott Stephens. The tree company’s insurance is covering the damage.

“The damage is currently being repaired and should be done hopefully this week. This caused us to use other cruisers more often,” Stephens said.

The department’s oldest cruiser, used for training, suffered minimal damage when a tree fell on its right rear bumper during the recent major snowstorm. The repair cost most likely will be paid out of the department’s budget, Stephens said, and the limited damage is not expected to exceed the deductible.

Police logged nine arrests, six of them during motor vehicle stops, during the two weeks from Feb.9 to Feb. 22:

  • Feb. 9, 10:42 p.m., officers arrested two individuals in response to a disturbance on Old Mill Road. A 44-year-old woman from York was arrested on five warrants for failure to appear on charges ranging from violating conditions of release, violation of a protection from abuse order, and resisting arrest or detention.  A 58-year-old male from South Berwick was charged with reckless conduct and violating conditions of release.
  • Feb. 11, 2 p.m., a 15-year-old male juvenile was charged with possession of marijuana during a drug incident near Marshwood High School and Route 236.

A terrorizing/threatening call logged Feb. 21, 2:21 p.m., came from an Emery’s Bridge Road residence where a woman reported threats being made against her adult female daughter. The daughter refused police services, said Stephens.
