Schumacher and Flinkstrom win Council seats, recount will fill third seat

Paul Schumacher and Sam Flinkstrom have won three-year terms on the Town Council, unseating incumbent Melissa Costella.

Schumacher, who received 1,206 votes, and Flinkstrom, who received 882, won against Brendan Boyle (819 votes), Kandice Thompson (597), Charles Nadeau (299) and Costella, who received 629.

Joel Martin and Brian Hussey were within a hairbreadth of each other in Tuesday’s election to fill the two-year term of former councilor Bill Cole, Martin edging out Hussey by a single vote. Martin received 1,239 votes and Hussey received 1,238 votes.

A recount of the ballots for Hussey and Martin, requested Thursday by Hussey, will take place 10 a.m. Friday at Town Hall.

Joe Long ran unopposed for a fifth term on MSAD35 school district’s Board of Directors, and received 2,068 votes.

Voters in South Berwick followed the state lead in their responses to statewide Questions 1 and 2.

Question 1 regarding absentee voting and voter IDs was voted down 1,986 to 788 here. And Question 2, adding red flag laws to gun control regulations in the state, passed locally with 2,010 votes in favor and 766 opposed.

The turnout in South Berwick was about 40% higher than the last odd-year election, with 2,784 ballots cast this year compared to 1,983 in 2023.
