Residents are no longer able to recycle glass at the Transfer Station.

Since there is no longer a market for recycled glass, the cost to repair the glass recycling machine doesn’t make sense, Assistant Town Manager Jennifer Janelle told Town Council members Tuesday. Some residents have accumulated glass, awaiting a decision about repair of the machine. Glass items do not need to be bagged and can be dropped directly into the “hopper.”

Councilor Jessica Cyr noted that Massachusetts and other states now mix crushed glass with other highway paving materials. She suggested citizens pressure state lawmakers to pass similar legislation for Maine, creating a market for glass. The only other option to reduce the amount of glass going to the landfill is to “reduce and reuse” as much as possible, she said.

Brush recycling will resume now that the area has been cleared of the large brush pile accumulated from spring cleanup by residents, Town Manager Tim Pellerin said.

Pellerin reported harassing and sometimes threatening behavior toward employees by citizens not abiding by Transfer Station rules. The council voted to post the rules and to make the public aware that non-compliance can result in fines ranging from $250 to $2,500.

A complete list of Transfer Station Rules is posted on the town website.
