Sarah Orne Jewett House Writers’ Group

HED: All invited to attend Jewett Writers’ Group at the Sarah Orne Jewett House DEK: The drop-in, no commitment group is open to new writers who want feedback for their novel, memoir, poetry, blog or other creative work. SOUTH BERWICK, Maine – The Jewett Writers’ Group will meet where it first began 10 years ago at the Sarah Orne Jewett House Museum and Visitor Center, 5 Portland Street, South Berwick, on Monday, September 8, from 6-8 p.m. All are invited to attend and to bring a piece of work to read, whether it be fiction, essay, poetry, memoir, blog or other creative work. The cost is $10. This is a non-mandatory, drop-in class, but many who first joined in 2015 continue and some have published books of fiction, poetry and memoir. The group, facilitated by Brian Evans-Jones, meets on the second Monday of each month from 6-8 p.m. over Zoom. The group originally met in person at the Sarah Orne Jewett House Museum and Visitor Center, located next door to the home of “Country of the Pointed Firs” author Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1919). COVID-19 forced everyone home and the group has been meeting virtually since. Those who attend read a section of their work and get feedback from other members and Evans-Jones, who has taught creative writing and poetry since 2008. Evans-Jones is originally from Britain where he was Poet Laureate of the Hampshire region. He facilitated a similar writing group there at the Jane Austen House. His poems have appeared in magazines and competitions on both sides of the Atlantic, and his students have gone on to publish books, win competitions and earn degrees in creative writing. Writers gain valuable insight into their work and get different viewpoints. Those who have yet to start writing gain a supportive audience to begin their projects. Brian also gives advice on the publishing process. Those wanting to attend need not submit a piece of work to read, but may listen to others and give feedback. The group is generally limited to eight readers, but usually all who submit work get a chance to read. Drop-ins are welcome.
