A new superintendent of schools will ideally be in place by July 1, the beginning of the next fiscal year, according to Joe Long, chair of the Maine SAD35 school board.
The board is in the midst of talking through the hiring process to replace John Caverly, who resigned Oct. 1 after a three-month leave of absence.
“We will have the job posted by late December,” Long said. Board members will discuss the hiring process in a workshop Dec. 17 that is open to the public, he said.
Heidi Early-Hersey, who was appointed interim superintendent on July 1, will continue that role until a permanent superintendent is hired. Since that time, she has also continued her duties as the district’s curriculum director, Title IX coordinator and affirmative action officer.
The board voted last week to hire two people to take over Early-Hersey’s curriculum, affirmative action and Title IX duties from Dec. 1 until June 30, 2026.
Katie Gilpatrick, literacy interventionist and Building Assets Reducing Risk coordinator at Marshwood Middle School, and Sara Allis, literacy coach/interventionist at Great Works School, will work half-time at their respective schools and half-time in the central office, Early-Hersey said.
“Together they will take over responsibility for curriculum coordination, professional development planning and assessment coordination,” Early-Hersey said. They both will be trained to serve as affirmative action officer and Title IX coordinator.
Allis and Gilpatrick each will receive a stipend of $15,000 for the extra duties.
