General Lafayette is due back in town next week as South Berwick joins in the nationwide bicentennial celebration of the Revolutionary War hero’s famous visit to the country.

An actor portraying Lafayette, the French nobleman and military officer who joined the colonies’ rebellion against the British monarchy in 1776, will appear at 10 a.m. June 24 on the front lawn of the Stage House Inn where he stopped exactly 200 years ago when traveling from Dover to Wells on his 13-month return tour to America.

Actors portraying innkeeper Sarah Frost, who ran the Frost Inn where Lafayette breakfasted, and Madam Cushing, who hosted Lafayette during his morning stop in South Berwick, will also be part of the reenactment.

During the morning program that begins with asssembly at 10 at Town Hall, inn owner Jim Flynn will dedicate an historical marker of the famous visit on the inn lawn, followed by short speeches about Lafayette’s visit.
