Creation of two volunteer-staffed committees to monitor implementation of the town’s recently approved Downtown Revitalization Plan and Comprehensive Plan has been endorsed by the Town Council.
Both committees will be ad hoc in nature and, as such, will not receive funding or have the authority to make decisions on behalf of the town. However, Town Manager Tim Pellerin stated at the Nov. 26 council meeting, “They will work closely with the town planner to ensure implementation of the goals contained in the plans.”
Among those goals are the protection of open space, business revitalization, and creation of pedestrian and bike paths in the downtown area.
Town councilors agreed to publicly announce anticipated formation of the committees this week, but will hold off on actual recruitment until detailed standards and expectations for committees and volunteers are determined.
“For example, if a volunteer with landscape experience was needed, we may want to develop specific criteria for that position,” said Council Chair Mallory Cook. “We also need to determine the overall roles and responsibilities of each of these committees.”
The council set a goal of determining roles and responsibilities at its Dec. 17 meeting. Subsequently, said Councilor John James, “We will give them the charge for their committee work after they have been selected.”
