Deputy Town Clerk Tyanne Vasapoli will be the new town clerk, replacing Barbara Bennett when she retires at the end of this month after 27 years in that position.
Vasapoli was sworn in as interim town clerk by Bennett during the South Berwick Town Council meeting this week. She will be sworn in as permanent town clerk by mid-February, according to Town Manager Tim Pellerin.
A public farewell party for Bennett is scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at the Community Center on Norton Street.
A town clerk search committee made up of town employees as well as town councilors Mallory Cook and John James agreed Monday to support the appointment of Vasapoli as both interim and permanent town clerk. The Town Council voted in support of Vasapoli at Tuesday’s meeting.
“Thank you very much for your support,” said Vasapoli after her ceremony. “This is a big step forward in my duties, and I am fortunate to continue to serve South Berwick as I have done for the past three years.”
Before working for the Town, Vasapoli was a teller and loan originator at People’s United Bank, now M&T Bank, in South Berwick. Vasapoli will be supported in her new position by Kandace Thompson, now the town customer service representative, who is being trained as deputy town clerk.
