National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, also referred to as Pearl Harbor Day, is observed annually in the United States on Dec. 7 to remember and honor the 2,403 Americans killed in Japan’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941. The early morning hour of the service coincides with the actual hour of the attack.
The U. S. declared war on Japan the following day, marking the nation’s entry into World War 2, which had been ongoing since September 1939 when Germany invaded Poland, and Great Britain and France declared war on Germany. Japan, along with Italy, was a leading ally of Nazi Germany.
World War II was the biggest and deadliest war in history, involving more than 30 countries and killing 60 million to 80 million people, including more than 405,000 American troops.
