South Berwick Town Clerk Barbara Bennett announced this week that she will retire on Jan. 31 after 27 years in that position.
Town Council members accepted her retirement at their meeting Wednesday and wished her well.
Councilor John James cast the lone, evidently symbolic, vote against Bennett’s retirement.
“I certainly appreciate all the help and assistance you have given me and all the citizens of South Berwick over the years,” James said. “I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.”
Assistant Town Manager Jennifer Janelle said she is interviewing candidates for Bennett’s replacement.
After the council meeting, Bennett responded with her signature wry humor to councilors remarking on her important role in Town Hall and the community.
“South Berwick has been a town for over 200 years,” she said, “and I’m sure it will continue to do so for another 200 years.”
