The Town Council this week unanimously agreed to have the town become a Purple Heart Town at the request of the commander of the local VFW post. As a result of the town’s decision, signs will be installed on several roads leading into town indicating the town’s designation.
Jeffrey Chase, commander of VFW Post 5744, presented a formal request to the council that South Berwick join the national program and become a Purple Heart Town to ”display community support and properly honor our servicemen and women who were wounded during combat.”
Although Chase said the VFW would pay for the signs, the councilors and Town Manager Tim Pellerin agreed the town would pay the $308, as suggested by Councilor Melissa Costella. Chase noted that being a Purple Heart town is a way to honor all veterans, not just those who have earned a Purple Heart.
