The Town Council voted last week to tear down the former Teen Center barn near the town soccer and ball fields. The building, known as the Red Barn, served as a youth center in the past but has fallen into a state of disrepair.
The plan is to gravel over the area to create parking spaces for the rec fields, said Town Manager Tim Pellerin.
The land is zoned strictly for recreational use according to an agreement with the town when Agamenticus Estates was developed.
The council voted unanimously to demolish the building, but before voting Councilor Melissa Costella expressed concern about “paving over paradise to put up a parking lot.” The area could be used for other recreational uses or to expand the community garden, she suggested.
Since it will not be paved, but graveled, the possibility of other future uses remains, Pellerin noted.
