Discover the vibrant story of French influence in South Berwick, Maine, and beyond with French Presence: Land, Liberty, & Legacy at the Counting House Museum. On view June 7 – October 26 every Sunday from 1–4 PM and by appointment, this beautiful exhibition is sponsored by the South Berwick Strawberry Festival and the Maine Humanities Council. Enjoy historical and colorful artifacts on loan from Maine Historical Society, Old Sturbridge Village, Old York Historical Society, the French Institute at Assumption University, R.H. Ashton, and Ken Hamilton — including a stunning cotton ball gown worn to a Lafayette Ball in 1824. You’ll also find historic photos and cherished artifacts from local South Berwick families that highlight the immigrant story at the heart of our community. Step inside to uncover how French spirit shaped our region’s past — and come celebrate a legacy that still inspires today!
