Ten South Berwick residents joined Town Councilors Mallory Cook and Paul Schumacher Jan. 31 in the Town Hall auditorium for the first meeting of Coffee with Councilors.

Councilors plan to hold these 9:30 a.m. gatherings on the last Saturday of every month, with different councilors rotating as hosts. Bagels and pastries from the Wildflower Cafe, a new business on Lower Main Street, along with coffee from Dunkin’ were provided by the hosts.

The event was meant to give folks an opportunity to ask in informal conversations about any concerns they might have, according to both Schumacher and Cook.

Among the topics raised were town growth and how to manage it; property taxation; housing density; traffic and pedestrian safety; and parking needs for residents of the Avesta Young Street Apartments.

One resident who dropped in gave the event high ratings.

“If you are looking for a tone-positive opportunity to meet and talk with your councilors…  I recommend it,” said Ted Sherbahn in a social media post afterward. “Being among a group of residents who love and care for the town and are looking to work together for a positive future is encouraging.”

“I really enjoyed it,” responded Schumacher. “It was great to meet you.”
