An engineering firm has been chosen to study the availability of water in the Punkintown business district.

Town councilors voted unanimously at their Sept. 23 meeting to hire VHB of South Portland to do the water study for $19,200.

The study is necessary because limited water wells at Punkintown are “impeding development at the site,” according to DeCarlo Brown, South Berwick’s planning and economic development director.

The study will examine whether there are more sources for water at Punkintown, according to Brown.

“We will be looking at a satellite water system that may connect to the town’s Water District sometime in the future,” he said.

Funding for the study will come from Punkintown TIF revenue, or Tax Increment Financing, generated as a result of the increased value of a property within the district. The Punkintown TIF district is located on Route 236 opposite Marshwood High School.

The water study will likely take two months to complete, Brown said.
