South Berwick police responded to an assault in progress at 90 Main St. on Tuesday, Aug. 6, according to the South Berwick police log. An ambulance responded to the scene and a police report was taken, but no other information was available on the log provided to the Reporter.

As of press time, police had not responded to requests for more information about the assault.

According to the log, during the weeks running from July 29 to Aug. 11, police completed:

***97 motor vehicle stops, in which 95 warnings and two summons were issued.

***54 directed patrols

***21 medical assists

***7 community contacts (one at Cumberland Farms resulting in the building area getting checked and secured.)

and responded to:

***6 motor vehicle accidents, including three with vehicle damage

***20 animal complaints

***10 citizen assists

***7 suspicious activities

***6 welfare checks

***2 larceny

***2 vandalism

***911 hang-ups

The log also listed calls for a disturbance, a mental health call, a drug incident, a sex offense, a lost/found property call, fingerprint requests and follow-up investigations. Police responded to a train/rail fire in North Berwick, along with a South Berwick Fire Department pumper and a tanker.

“Directed patrol” indicates a police officer is doing some type of enforcement, prevention or simply providing a presence, according to Lt. Scott Stephens. A “community contact” refers to an officer having a conversation with someone in the community. A “summons” requires a person to show up in court. A “building/area check” means an officer is either checking a business that is closed to make sure it’s secure and nothing suspicious is occurring; checking on a house at the request of a resident who is away; or checking an outdoor area that is closed to the public after dark.
